The Daily Faces

If this man was born in Finland he would now have been a famous rocker I think.

Here he is a beggar.

Bad luck for him.

I met this guy (and his family) on a train to Huế on Tết.

Couldn’t manage to buy full tickets, they ended up sitting by the stinky on-train toilet for two days from Saigon to Hanoi.

This is how he slept – sitting position in a corner, with his head on their clothes (read: rags) and luggage as the pillow.

When I arrived at Huế station, they had one more entire day to reach the oh-so-nice capital.

I’m back from a long holiday. Lunar New Year, or Tết to be exact.

So this guy was singing us a song for a new spring coming. He possessed a great voice, and he played guitar so well.

And he was making a living from people’s pity.

I know another person, who possesses a good voice and plays guitar pretty well too. He’s earning like VND millions a day now.

P.S. The latter is not blind, if that makes any differences.

If you ever wonder what the title means – it’s like “thinking about billions” in English. The saying has a rhyme in Vietnamese.

Well in Vietnam everything has its rhyme.

I rarely give a handout. Reason? Too many beggars here for me to afford.

I know a group of people that are rich enough to afford that sum of money to the huge load of beggars in this country.

Too bad they are the very ones that have been making this country full of beggars.

You can’t expect much from beggars. In some conditions you can’t expect much from the wealthy, neither.

Isn’t that sad?

This guy was trying to sell me some lottery tickets.

“Happy new year, and good luck bro” he told me. His face however, seemed to say “Now buy or die, make your choice” .

Saw this guy eating tofu and talking to his friend by the street one afternoon.

A construction worker at his happy moment.

One protects, one destroys.

One flies, one crawls.

One deserves all the hails, one to spit at.

Too bad, the wrong one lives in imagination.
